Melissa and Adam: Engagement Session at Union Station, Kansas City March 1, 2009

ma4

This afternoon, I met up with Melissa and Adam at Union Station in Kansas City for their engagement session. This was our first session of two — one in the city, one in the country! I’m really looking forward to meeting up with Melissa and Adam again this summer during the middle of harvest season for another engagement session in the fields of Adam’s new farm (he just bought it last week — congratulations again!). :) I am even more excited after they totally “brought it” in their session today. It was a freezing cold day with inches of snow on the ground, so we spent most of our session inside at Union Station.

Check these two out! I think I have the most good-looking clients in the world!

I love the next two — so romantic!

This part of Union Station can actually be rented out as a wedding or reception venue… beautiful!

I love Melissa and Adam’s photos because they’re so snuggly in them. :)

After several “takes” we finally made a heart shape out of their hands. :) So cute.

Engagement: Kathy and Jeff, Kansas City Plaza February 23, 2009

kathjeff81

She’s from Maryland. He’s a Nebraska native. She loves animals. He loves animals. They love each other. :) Kathy and Jeff met as students in the veterinary medicine program at K-State. Now, they’re both working in Illinois, with a family of rescued dogs (was it seven? eight?) from small to big, all getting showered with love from these two veterinarians! I met Kathy and Jeff when they stopped in Kansas City on their way back from Manhattan to their home in Illinois. We took engagement photos around the Plaza in Kansas City, without getting too much of a Kansas City vibe, since the city doesn’t necessarily hold any of their history and memories. I love how you can just tell how much they love each other in these photos!

I love this next shot! These two are so comfortable with each other… it definitely makes my job an easy one!

They probably thought I was crazy for making them stand in a dumpster alley for this next shot, but luckily, they trusted me. They’re so joyful here, and we all know how much I love that! :)

Kathy and Jeff, I can’t wait to see you again in August for your Kansas state (not Kansas State! Ha ha!) themed wedding! You guys are great!

Jeff and I shot Kelsey and Danny’s engagement photos this afternoon, and I am SO excited about these images! I can’t wait to share the entire post with tons of photos from their entire shoot, but for now here’s a few from one portion of our session to get you by. :)

Details coming with the next post… I bet you’re wondering how we got access to the KU football stadium, huh? Oh, the suspense!

Engagement: Marisa and John at Kansas City’s Union Station February 4, 2009

I met Marisa and John for the first time this past weekend after several weeks of chatting about their wedding on the phone. I was already excited about their wedding before I met them, but after spending time with them (and the ADORABLE boys!), I’m even more excited to make the trip to Garden City, Kansas, for their wedding in May. Yes, that’s right. Garden City.

They made the 7+ hour drive to Kansas City for their engagement session. John wanted a modern, urban feel. Marisa wanted the great outdoors. So, like anyone entering a marriage relationship knows how to do, we compromised. :)

We started out in Union Station, the gorgeous and historic train station in downtown KC. The light was beautiful streaming through the tall windows.

Then we headed right outside — these are taken outside the modern building where Science City is housed, connected to the old traditional station.

mj16

mj15

Any time there are young kids — especially boys — in a photo shoot, I always look for locations that can engage their interest, so the photography portion isn’t so boring. The old trains outside of the station were perfect, and helped capture some candid shots of their adventurous spirit… as well as some great family photos!

Marisa and John are so cute! :) I love these next two images.

mj10

mj14

Our next stop was the front of Union Station, for some architecture-focused shots with a little wide-angle lens action…

mj8

mj7

It’s hard to resist the fountains at Crown Center, especially with two little boys!

mj6

Here, they were trying to convince each other to run through the fountain… guess who had the courage to actually do it? The little guy… :)

mj5

Our next stop was for more outdoorsy photos, since they’re from a farming community and didn’t want all of the images to be really Kansas City-focused. So, we were off to the park!

mj4

mj2

Huge piles of leaves offered some entertainment for the boys, and some great photos of boys being boys.

mj1

And, one more of the happy couple!

mj3

Marisa and John, I am so excited to see you again in May. You were so awesome to work with!

Great Wedding Resource and GIVEAWAY at WeddingFanatic January 9, 2009

I love this time right after the holidays — so many couples get engaged during the holiday festivities and start planning their weddings. Or, couples realize that the new year is already here and that they have some planning to do for their big day! :)

The details and planning that go into making  a wedding a personalized, memorable event can sometimes be overwhelming. Fortunately for all of you planning a wedding right now, there are so many great resources — right at your fingertips!

One of those resources is a website/blog called WeddingFanatic. It’s run by a Kansas City wedding coordinator, and is a great resource for tips and ideas about all things wedding related. They are also hosting an absolutely incredible giveaway right now!

Engagement: Amy and Roy, KC Crossroads District November 9, 2008

arbluegate

Amy and Roy met through their church youth group in high school. Then, Roy’s family moved across the country to Maryland, leaving the two friends miles and miles apart. They remained friends, kept in touch, and eventually fell in love… and now, they’re back in the same state at least, and planning a wedding!

I love stories like this (maybe because I had a long-distance friendship/relationship that turned into marriage!), and I love couples like Amy and Roy who are so excited about their engagement and wedding photography. They came with outfit ideas, knew that they wanted something urban and artsy and fun, and also trusted me to pick that location. That led us right to the Crossroads District of Kansas City, home to lots of art galleries, studios, coffee shops and cool abandoned buildings. :)

I love the colors Amy and Roy chose for their outfits. It created a modern type of twist on traditional fall colors, and it was perfect for our downtown location! Plus, they look amazing…

The weather was so cold — in the 30s — but Amy and Roy did such a good job looking stylish and keeping warm. Cold weather? Nothing a little hugging can’t fix! :) And thanks for lending me your gloves, Amy! :) You are too sweet.

I LOVE when we capture images like this — two people madly in love, having fun together… that’s what makes life so happy.

Amy and Roy were willing to be a little silly and try some crazy things during our shoot. I love to hear people say things like, “How about I’ll jump on Roy’s back?” :) There’s a whole series of fun photos like this, which are going to be so fun for them to have!

Amy and Roy, thanks for braving the cold with me and being just so much fun to work with. I can’t wait for your big day in May! :)

Engaged: Tara and Tom October 29, 2008

I met up with Tara and Tom this evening in the old downtown Overland Park area. I have never shot there before, but I’ve been eyeing it for a few months — cool store fronts, lots of small town charm in the middle of the city. So I was excited when Tara and Tom agreed to meet me there!

I’m thrilled with how their photos turned out, and even more excited now for their January wedding.

Tara and Tom are so cute together — seriously, I had tons of these types of photos to choose from. :)

I can’t wait to see how awesome Tara will be working it out for the camera in a wedding dress! Check out this model face!

One of my favorites from our session…I wish you all could hear Tara’s laugh in a photo. :) I did my best to capture it here!

I am so excited to be a part of your wedding day experience! You two are great!

Engagement: Kim and Kyle October 5, 2008

Kim and Kyle were up for anything during their engagement shoot — when I suggested visiting the rooftop terrace of the library downtown, they didn’t hesitate. When I suggested taking photos on the giant chess set on the rooftop terrace, they still said sure (even though Kim doesn’t know how to play the game…). :) Thanks for being so open to new creative ideas!

The rooftop gave us some great views of downtown Kansas City. I love these cityscape shots:

Kim and Kyle meet while living in the residence halls at K-State — they met the year that I was an RA in the very same building! More proof that the world is really small…

Thanks for choosing ericamay photography — I’m looking forward to your wedding next October!
