Engagement Photos at Clinton Lake: Sarah and Brett October 27, 2009

I seriously have the best clients. I get to meet the nicest, smartest, cutest people. :) Sarah and Brett are an awesome couple — and I’m so excited that I get to capture their love through photographs. Sarah and Brett wanted to do their engagement session at Clinton Lake in Lawrence, Kansas, where they spent a lot of time during their college years. I love shooting at places that mean something to a couple and where they share memories together. It was also the perfect fall location with gorgeous soft fall colors.

I knew that Sarah would want to see a sneak peek right away (she’s been waiting for her debut on the blog!). Here are just a few of my favorites. :)

I love it when my couples trust me… even if it means climbing into some tall grass where unknown creatures might be lurking. :) I love this one!

Seriously, aren’t they super cute together? :)

Sarah really loves photos with streaming, glowing light through trees. There was rain all around us, and we got sprinkled on for a while, but the sun popped out for about 30 seconds and I grabbed a few glowing light photos just for this bride-to-be. :)

I must admit, I’m glad the sky was a little ominous the day of our shoot, because it created really cool colors on the water and the sky looks heavy. I think it has such a romantic feel.

I love how comfortable Sarah and Brett are together (and in front of my camera).

We took a few fun photos of Sarah’s engagement ring, too (which is GORGEOUS!).

I thought this sign and the foliage growing around it were super cool.

Sarah and Brett, I am so excited that you’ve asked me to capture this time in your relationship. I can’t wait for your wedding next year — it’s going to be awesome! :)

Family Photos at Shawnee Mission Park October 8, 2009

Shawnee Mission Park is a popular place for photos this time of year — I had two in one week out there! The second was for this cute family. I love photographing children and getting to spend some time with them. Kids just really crack me up, and I love how everything is so neat to them. Especially at the age of this little guy, Connor. At almost 2 years old, the world is one big wonder!

Fall is a great time for family portraits — I especially love the sweaters that come out in the fall. :) Here’s Connor with his parents:

He is just so sweet! Look at those pretty blue eyes and his adorable little smile. :)

I love this one. Connor liked to lead the way.

He also liked to run to my camera. :)

And then give me one of these looks… :) What a cutie!

How cute is this one? :) It just makes me want to shout, “YAY!!”

We also visited the boats, which was very exciting for a little boy.

And one more with mom and dad… taken right before he stood up and ran for the next awesome thing. :) I love kids. I wish we all had that same sense of adventure after we’re grown-ups. :)

Thanks for asking me to take your family photos! It was a really fun time, and Connor is so sweet. Have a great fall season!

Kansas City Engagement Session: Shalynn & Waylon, Shawnee Mission Park October 6, 2009

Shalynn and Waylon share a lot of things in common, but one big thing stands out: their love for adventure. From extreme sports (extreme for me, at least!), to traveling, to trying new things, these two know how to have fun. And best of all, they love to experience life together.

Waylon had the most creative proposal idea I’ve heard so far. He told Shalynn that they were going to take a trip to Denver, do some rafting, and experience Colorado. She was excited, and boarded a plane to Denver. Yet, when they got to Denver, they didn’t leave the airport. Instead, Waylon told her they were jumping on a plane bound for Los Angeles. So they did. Yet, when they got to Los Angeles, they didn’t leave the airport. Instead, Waylon told her they were actually going to Hawaii. And when they got to Hawaii… okay, okay… they stayed there. :) And Waylon asked Shalynn to be his wife. And she said yes. What a cool story, huh?

So where do you take a couple who loves the great outdoors and living adventurously in it? And where in the world do you find that in Kansas? :) We chose Shawnee Mission Park as the location, since the fall colors are beautiful there right now, there are all sorts of things to explore, and plenty of wildlife to see.

Here are some of my favorites from their session.

Pretty, pretty Shalynn!

I like this one — the light, the couple, the windy little path…

The wildlife cooperated with us for a little bit… these geese flew overhead as we were trying to sneak up on a group of deer. Perfect!

This deer cooperated for about 2.5 seconds. :) Even from a distance, I still like how this one came out!

The sunset provided a beautiful light for the end of our session. I love the colors in the water and the trees here… and how cute Shalynn and Waylon are. :)

We couldn’t take a boat out on the water (and I was too nervous to ask the fisherman if we could borrow his boat), so we just used some as props. :)

Shalynn and Waylon — thanks so much for asking me to take your engagement photos! I hope your engagement is a fun adventure!

Kansas City Baby Photography: Tucker’s 9-Month Photos September 29, 2009

It was so much fun seeing Tucker and his parents again. :) I love this part of what I do — I get to see babies as they grow up and get big and develop cute little personalities over their first year. Doing a first year package is an awesome way for parents to capture their children over the first year, and an awesome way for me to get to hang out with cute babies multiple times throughout the year. :)

Tucker is all smiles, has the biggest blue eyes, and is just super adorable. Our session was fall themed, the weather was perfect, and we had a great time! Here are some of my favorites.

Kansas City Senior Photos: Marissa at the Nelson-Atkins September 17, 2009

I love getting to meet seniors as they start (or finish) their senior year of high school. It’s such an exciting time for them, as they begin to explore what they can do after this school year. It’s so much fun to hear about plans and dreams and what they’re looking forward to this year.

Marissa wanted a fun senior session that had some different styles and combined all of her loves — including soccer, her dog, and clothes! We met up at the Nelson-Atkins museum for the different styles that the one location offers — old and new, classic and modern.

Here are some of the shots from her session this week:

She brought along her golden retriever, who was SO sweet (and who wore a K-State bandana — Go Cats!).

We stayed later so it was dusk and the Bloch Building would start glowing — I love it at night! It made for a fun change in the middle of Marissa’s senior photos!

Kansas City Senior Photos: Matt in the Crossroads District September 13, 2009

I love doing senior sessions in fun urban locations, so I was so excited when Matt agreed to do his senior session in the Crossroads District of Kansas City. It’s really a photographer’s dream location, with all sorts of textures, colors, patterns and lines to work with. Add in a senior guy who is extremely comfortable in front of the camera, and we have a fun session on our hands. :) I had some trouble narrowing down my favorites for this post!

I love the old signs and writing that used to be painted on the sides of brick buildings, like this:

2010 is Matt’s graduating year, and also the address on this fun red door. :)

Great eyes and a great smile! He made my job super easy.

I loved the shadows and the patterns they produced:

I love the lines in the next three images.

More fun writing on the old warehouse buildings, which are now mostly converted into lofts.

We were walking around looking for great locations, when a man told us about an abandoned building on a corner that he thought photographers would love. I wouldn’t normally just head into an abandoned building, but we had a little entourage along for the photo shoot, and the spot looked too cool to pass up. :) Here are the photos we took in the building, which will be converted into something new and usable soon, I’m sure. I’m glad we got a chance to use it!

Kansas City Engagement Session: Jamie and Rodrick September 3, 2009

I met up with Jamie and Rodrick at the park on the most beautiful day in early September. The light was perfect, soft, and just before sunset. Add in two really cute people who are really in love (after 8 years together!) and it’s the best way to spend an evening. I’m going to keep the talking short and just show you their cuteness. :)
